A bit of my ancient history!
When I was two years old I stuck a pair of forceps into an electrical outlet and caused a big flash which caused all the lights to go out. I was thrilled, my mother was horrified... from then on, I've always been interested in things electric.
In the 8th grade I entered the "ROC Power Plant" in the science fair. This was a wooden frame with a lawn mower engine that I built with my father. The engine was connected to an old crank telephone generator and then to a light bulb. It worked! If I revved the engine too high the bulb would get really bright and burn out.
As a freshman in High School, a friend and I built a "Ten Stage Flip Flop Computer" and won at the county level science fair even though the transistors didn't work...technical difficulties.. but all the lights flashed as if it worked and the judges were impressed!
As a Junior, I won at the State level for my 15 minute 16mm animated movie entitled "Operation of a Rectilinear Scanner". Does the term "nerd" come to mind? ;-)
